I've been thinking about the fact that one of the truly wild aspects of human nature, the tendency toward violence that has persisted throughout evolution, hasn't faded. I can't help but reflect on the fact that we still harbor some of our ancient tendencies, our almost animalistic impulses, only to adapt them to modern times and keep them under control. We must limit and constantly control our wild impulses. While some of us have developed effective willpower control systems, others still easily lose control. Perhaps even if insanity, the advanced form of anger, were to become one of our darkest emotions, we would never be able to completely rid ourselves of it.
What is this blindness in your heart, this silence in your conscience, this loss? What happened to the days when the heart saw what the eye couldn't see? What happened to the days when words healed what the hand had harmed? What happened to the hearts that turned their backs and walked to your apologies with their feet? What happened to the days when those who rose in anger sat in harm's way? What happened to the ears that listened to the voice of conscience, to the relationships mended by courage? When did the ropes of respect that bind us together in the bond of life and love break?
